September (After) Cat climbed the front steps of the two-story cottage, eyes sweeping across the empty porch, the heavily curtained windows, the sign just beside the door proclaiming the potentially threatening presence of a dog. She wasn’t sure what she’d expected, but somehow the politely disinviting atmosphere wasn’t it. Cobwebs, perhaps. Crows roosting on the eaves. A dark aura, as her old college roommate had liked to call it. Something eerie. But the house on Overlook Avenue was just that: a house. The siding was new, the shutters painted, the windows modern. The yard and flowers out front were neat and healthy, and
